Congratulations to Dickie Day and Eric Batchelor on defeating Paul Vamvacopoulus and his Weybridge partner in the Zonal Final of the EBA Over 55 Pairs on Thursday 24th. Having reached the last 16 they now go on to the National Finals at Worthing on 19th August.

Publication of the East Surrey League positions at the end of July found us sitting proudly on top with a record of played 10 won 9 with total points of 48.5. In second place were last year’s winners Shirley Park with a record of played 9 won 8 with total points of 47.5. Epsom were in third place with a record of played 9 won 7 lost 2 with total points of 36.

Thus the home game against Horley on Saturday was our chance to further consolidate our position which we achieved with a full 4 rink win by 92 shots to 49. With Shirley Park winning at Old Coulsdon on Saturday by 5 points to 1 we now hold a 2 point lead.

Following Saturdays result we have 3 remaining games in the league against Warlingham Park next Saturday, Purley on 6 September and Epsom on 13 September. Barring a catastrophe we now look pretty certain to repeat last year’s second place and, with a fair wind, now stand every chance of going one better this year. Let’s hope for a fatal slip from Shirley Park over the closing weeks of the season!

Further good progress was made in both the Past Times 2 rink competition on Friday 25th, when a very strong Sutton team was defeated by 2 shots on both the Home and Away rinks, and in The Arthur Hughes triple on Sunday 28th when last years winners, Chessington, were defeated on their home rink by 9 shots.

Monday 28 July saw a Yonwin Cup game against Purley where we were looking to follow up earlier wins in both the EBA Double Fours and the EBA Top Club. Fortunately we were able to ease out as winners on 2 of the 3 rinks and by 10 shots overall although, in fairness to Purley, this did not seem likely to be the result for 3 quarters of the game.

Sunday saw the return fixture against Herne Bay when they returned our earlier visit. Once again they generously treated us to plates of delicious prawns and cockles and we repaid their generosity by reclaiming the Jack Holness trophy which is based on the combined scores from both fixtures.

The coming week sees our first fixture in the new 2 wood triples Villamoura League with 1 triple at home and 1 away on Friday afternoon against Pulley Bury , the vital East Surrey League game against Warlingham Park on Saturday and the Club internal 2 wood competition on Sunday.
